The siege at Singur

On the first day of the Trinamool ‘dharna’, agitators at Singur raised the slogan ‘Go Back Tata’. Everyone from Mamata Banerjee and Medha Patkar to Amar Singh of the Samajvadi Party had the same thing to say: the Tatas should go to some other state since other states have invited the Tatas to setup the small car factory there. The Trinamool supremo was addressing a lower-than-expected gathering around Singur, an hour's drive from Kolkata, where the Trinamool Congress has begun an indefinite siege in support of those farmers, who had refused to accept compensation for the land the state has acquired for the Nano project and has leased out to Tata Motors. The arterial road of the state, Durgapur expressway, a part of the NH 2, remains under siege since the dharna started yesterday. Around 400 agitators squatted on the road blocking the whole National Highway to a halt. People in the state of West Bengal are suffering as vehicles are not being able to pass through this main thoroughfare of the state. Traffic is at a standstill over a span of more than 100 kms. Thousands of trucks loaded with foods and other materials are stranded, at least four districts are cut off by road communication from the capital, Kolkata. There is a possibility of food crisis in the cut-off districts. Trinamool supremo, Mamata Banerjee, along with her newfound friends - the Naxalites and the SUCI, stayed back at Singur last night. She maintained that they were not at the dharna to destroy the fencing wall of the small car factory. If they had, they would have brought ammunitions with them. She declared that she had come to get back the 400 acres of land from the project site. She asserted that the whole 997 acre land has been taken forcefully. So she will allow the small car factory to be setup in the 600 acres if the rest 400 acres land is given back. Otherwise, she is will bid the ‘Tatas … bye … bye’.

People from all walks of life in Bengal are on tenterhooks with the situation at Singur because of this continuous siege and agitation by the Trinamool led Krishijami Jiban Jibika Raksha Committee (KJJRC). At the time of writing this report it can be said that the fences of the factory are still intact and work is in progress inside. But it is very difficult to guess what will happen in the night or the days ahead. There were numerous rumours all through the day that the fence is being broken down in some or other part of the factory site. The Trinamool supremo declared that she would not take any responsibility if someone breaks down the fencing of the factory, since she was not in Singur to pull it down. She instructed her party workers not to go near the Tata fencing as she hates the Tatas. She opined, if this siege of the national highway continues the government will have to bow down and return the land some day.

A lot of luxury buses and Tata Sumos filled with agitators drove towards the site of the siege around the upcoming Tata car plant throughout the day since morning. The first camp is near the wall where the factory site starts, just after Dankuni. It is being run by Trinamool supporters. The other camps are being manned by the SUCI and the Progressive Indira Congress of ex-Congress leader, Somen Mitra. The Trinamool supremo is in the eighth camp. The tenth camp is housing the PDS. The Samajvadis are occupying the ninth camp.

Naxalite leaders of the CPI(ML) New Democracy were also seen alongside the Trinamool chief at the site of the dharna. Some Maoist organizers were seen in the nearby villages. The agitators occupied the national highway for the whole night completely blocking the traffic movement since afternoon. Each of the coming days has been allocated for agitators from different districts.

Yesterday West Bengal saw many rallies demanding industrialization to create employment and condemning the agitation by the Trinamool as a move against the states’s progress. The rallies raised slogans against the rainbow opposition for creating a situation that reminds the people of the dark days of semi-fascist terror in Bengal in the1970s.

Work at the Tata Motors small-car project was affected on Monday with majority of contract workers staying away after they were threatened with severe consequences if they did not join the protest with the Trinamool. "Attendance of the company officials was normal. But that of the contractual workers was less than normal," a Tata Motors spokesman said.

Already facing delay, the company has been racing against time to meet the October-December quarter-deadline for the roll -out of the Nano. The company is also facing cost overruns. It is believed that the Uttarakhand facility in Pantnagar is the Plan B for Tata if Singur does not succeed. The Rajasthan government has invited Tata Motors to set up the Nano project in the state. Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje has also sent a delegation to meet the Tata Motors executives.

Punjab, too, has thrown in its hat in the ring. The Punjab government has decided to invite Tata Group Chairman Ratan Tata to set up a plant in the state to manufacture the Nano. A Tata Group delegation will be invited for a formal meeting with the Chief Minister so that every aspect of the proposed plant can be discussed. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Rajasekara Reddy has also put forward a formal proposal for hosting the project in the state two days after Ratan Tata threatened to walk out of West Bengal over continued violence in Singur. The Andhra Pradesh government has indicated that land for the project is available on the outskirts of Hyderabad, Visakhapatnam, Kakinada or Naidupet near Guntur.

Giving another call for reconciliation over the Singur impasse, West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee today, appealed to Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee to move towards a dialogue on the issue. According to the secretariat of the Chief Minister, Mr Bhattacharjee sent another letter to the Trinamool chief to hold talks with the government so that the political problem over land acquisition for the Tata Motors small car project could be amicably sorted out. Though details of the letter were yet to be officially announced, it was learnt that the Chief Minister urged Ms Banerjee to present her alternative plan for setting up the ancillary industries for the Nano car project if 400 acres of land was given back to the farmers. “We can't let the Tatas move out of West Bengal”, Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee said on Monday in his letter to Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee while inviting her for talks to resolve the standoff over farmland acquisition for the Tata Motors small car factory in Singur.

“I am ready to discuss everything with Mamata Banerjee regarding the Singur land row. I've written in my letter that we'll jointly find a solution for the Tata Motors Singur plant,” the Chief Minister told reporters at Writers' Building, the state secretariat. He said: "I request Mamata Banerjee to join the process of dialogue and resolve the matter. We have to solve the issue for the sake of industrialisation of the state." Expressing concern over Tata Group chairman Ratan Tata's pull-out threat, Bhattacharjee said, "Already five state governments have evinced interest to welcome Tata Motors' Nano project in their states.”

Last week Ratan Tata said he would move out of West Bengal if the agitation persists in Singur. The situation should not continue. “It is a peculiar state of affairs," he said.
The siege at Singur continues.

Is Govrnment of West Bengal

Is Govrnment of West Bengal is lame duck. Discussion can take place only between groups having minimum sense. If you call rowdies for discussion, they'll make this honor for their own benefit. Ruling means thrashing of bad elements and nourishing good elements. In Nandigram government always tried to make a negotiation with so-called committee even after death of Police Inspector and ultimately failed to restore the peace and its own fame. Something is again going to happen for Singur. Boldness is not a non-democratic word, a shaky government or party cannot protect interest of common mass.

The siege at Singur

It really does not amaze us to see Mamata Bannerjee a champion of anti-industrialization and Medha Patkar the champion of "environmentalism of the poor", in the same league. Without a slightest doubt and to much of our chagrin we now can comprehend the understanding that both of them hold on development. This alliance is a classical example of anti-modernity . It is imperative to introspect the left-front goverment's mistakes , but the premises of criticism that the troika of Ms.Banerjee , Medha Patkar and Amar Singh reflect is utter reactionary in every sense of the word. Mr Amar Singh, one of the biggest advocates of the nuclear deal today stands in solidarity with a so called peoples movement. Ms . Banerjee and her megalomaniac stands are not even worth criticizing , but what hurts is the position that people like Medha Patkar have taken.

Siege at Singur

I think, some of the farmers may be aggrieved because lands outside the project area are skyrocketing. If a farmer received compensation, say around 3 lakhs for one bigha plot and if the present price of the same quantity of land outside project area is 4 times (as reported in the media), then it is obvious that he/she will think as being deprived. Against so much provocation and brainstorming, he will not be reasonable enough to see that the price increase is because of the factory. I would suggest that the Government should immediately declare that changing character of any land by private parties outside the project area but within 30 km radius, will not be allowed under any circumstances. I think, there is already such a law in force and Government should use it. In this way, price of these lands will not increase and farmers will be contented, at least, regarding the compensation amount. After all, every sane person will want this factory, After long years an opportunity has come to turn around. If we loose it, future will not forgive us,

Who is Responsible Buddha Babu or People of SINGUR

Who is responsible for this inpass in Singur. Definitely not Mamata, SUCI or as you call them Maoist. Solely it is the WORKING class government of Westbengal which is out against the workers. TATA going out of WB is nothing but a ploy to decieve the middle class.

CPI(M) leadership alongwith the chambers of commerce and the pliant media loyal to the CPI(M) are now making an all-out effort to show that this struggle is unjustified, paralysing normalcy, blocking traffic, hindering supply of eatables and other goods via road to Calcutta city and scaring Tata and other industrialists to keep the state out of their investment. Despite availability of several alternative routes, the administration under instructions from the government is forcing loaded trucks to take Durgapur expressway and get stuck so that the stranded truck owners could be used against the movement and an impression created in the minds of Calcutta people that owing to the agitation, the markets would go high and dry pushing up prices of essential commodities. Entire propaganda machinery is now pressed to denigrate movement as disruptive of normal life flow and hence liable for being spurned. The government is also in order to play to the gallery giving call of negotiated settlement to Mamata Banerjee. But it is refusing to consider the issue of return of 400 acres of land, the demand on which this movement is being conducted. Tatas who earlier admitted requirement of 600 acres for the plant now in connivance with the CPI(M) talking of imperativeness to be in possession of balance 400 acres as well for housing ancillary industries which, any thinking person will understand, is a futile logic since such units could well be located on a different plot. In fact, this invitation of talk is nothing but a cunning ploy to diffuse the movement.

Who will be the saviour?

You are wrong on many counts. But let me concentrate on one factor and place one thought for your consideration. Just try to imagine a scenario - 400 acres of land returned to non-willing farmers. TATA stopped all work and closed the mother plant of 600 acres. The locals who got jobs become unemployed once again; those who are expecting jobs become frustrated (It may not matter to you, because they are small in numbers). TATA abandoned all its development activities in the area. Non-willing farmers get back their land but it is uncultivable because of deep concrete piling. To convert the land again to cultivable condition, the farmers now require huge fund which is unavailable. Government does not provide fund because now they are not owners and shrugs off all responsibilities. Farmers cannot accuse the government now. Banks will not provide fund because there is no such scheme. No other large industry house will come forward because of the past experience. In this imagined scenario what the farmers will now do? They can not even seek the amount which they refused earlier. Some small timers and land sharks may come and wait for the opportune moment when the farmers will be bound for distress sale and which will be much much less than the compensation. TATA will loose some money; but they can afford to loose. They will, of course, retain the 600 acres for future sale, may be after 10/20/30 years. The whole area will be a hunting place for ghosts. No industry, no agriculture, no township - a godforsaken place. In the meantime, the farmers will be relegated to BPL (below poverty line) category. Who will come forward to save them? Who will be their saviour in such an eventuality? Who will feed them? I hope you have an answer.

wrong justification

Mr.Anonymous I dont know whose front are you representing definitely it's not the working class. In singur most of the protesters are from outside singur only assembled there to give claps to so called messiah of bengal.400 acres is not an issue but to disrupt bengal's industrialisation and make bengal plugged in same problem.People of bengal support govt's policy and made them major in assembly. So please stop wrong politics and help bengal CM to make us proud.

Singur

Let us expose the bluff that is 400 acre. It has never been 400 Acres but at most 167 acre.
This has been a clever ploy by TMC to exaggerate the number of unwilling farmers.
But, where are those farmers in the dharna. It has been orchestrated by some Kolkata-based intellectuals to tarnish the image of State Government. What they failed to understand, that it tarnishes the image of West Bengal rather than a political party.
Show me a large development project in modern India, where 100% of the land has been acquired with due consent. Tell me, why did the government set up the Hindustan Motor factory at uttarpara. Was it not on the farmland? How much compensation has been paid to the farmers? Let us discuss facts & not sweeping remarks on right & wrong.

Singur

Two years back, the CPI (M)-led government in West Bengal acquired 1,000 acres of extremely fertile multi-crop agricultural land by evicting the peasants at gunpoint rending thousands homeless and landless. This was to set up a highly sophisticated capital-intensive automobile industry by TATAs.

Singur KrishiJami Raksha Committee (SKJRC) (Committee for ProtectingAgricultural land in Singur) was formed to fight this forced acquisition of land. Trinamool Congress (TMC) and SUCI (a communist party) are important constituents of SKJRC.

The CPI (M) led government did not hesitate to let loose its armed police on the agitating peasants to orchestrate one of the most brutal lethal attacks on legitimate democratic movement of these peasants. Raj Kumar Bhul, a protesting youth was killed; peasants were dragged out of their houses to be mercilessly beaten and maimed, Tapasi Malik, a young adolescent activist was brutally raped and burnt alive plan fully by ruling party-backed criminals. Modesty of the women was outraged. Many have starved to death. The whole country burst into protest. Leading intellectuals and thinking personalities called this savagery unprecedented.

Similar incident at Nandigram in West Bengal backfired on CPI(M).
Nandigram peasants braving all odds courageously stood up and foiled the scheme of the government to set up a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) in keeping with the prescripts of capitalist globalization. Singur-Nandigram have become legends in the annuls of democratic mass movement providing spunk and determination to the fighting people in other parts of the country to rise in protest against such forcible land grab or any other injustice. The local elections after this saw CPI(M) wiped out in these areas.

The Singur peasants are now voicing demand for return of 400 acres of land belonging to the unwilling owners who have refused to receive compensation cheque. It may be added that the Tatas themselves in a letter written to Mamata Banerjee, the TMC leader said that the proposed automobile plant would need only 600 acres of land. So there is every legitimacy in claiming back the said 400 odd acres of land.

The majority of the farmers

The majority of the farmers of Singur volunteered to give there land and excepted compensation offered. Mamata initially took a stand of opposing the growth and betterment of the state in the guise of "SKJRC". Initially decide to oppose the plant with a fake fasting that defied medical logic then realized that not many people would back her in controlling the area with outside help of armed criminals changed her stand to return of 1s 400 acres of land and then 300. The main objective is not too opposing the factory but to ensure that it does not come up. The threats used by the TMC supporters to drive away employees were captured live by local news channels. Also the when a few IT employees went to too meet Mamata Ji at Singur her trusted leftents threatened them of dire consequences if the did not go away before the count of 3 again in front of TV cams.

to anonymous

Mr/Miss anonymous.....as anonymous as SKJRC. the important constituents of this SKJRC are TMC (an old ally of the BJP) and SUCI ( a so called communist party)!!! such is the (self-contradictory, confused) character of SKJRC. a rainbow-organisation, devoid of any ideology (or a peaceful coexistence of communalism and 'communism'...eh...mr/miss anonymous?), only with a common anti-people anti CPI(M) agenda. the nature of this same alliance's "democratic" movement in singur and nandigram is as follows: first day of violence in nandigram, samerun bibi (a woman and a muslim) was attacked; sankar samanta- he was hacked to three pieces......indeed a democratic movement!! thousands of poor farmers, labourers, fishermen/women....children... evicted out of their homes- their only crime is that they are CPI(M) supporters. indeed SUCI and naxalites are pro-poor!!! what a theorisation...eh...mr/miss anonymous?

"..prescripts of capitalist globalisation..." mr/miss anonymous, there is something as "communist globalisation" too or what? setting up of "capital intensive" factory is globalisation? what an anonymous theory; never heard of such one. then setting up of heavy industries under mahalanobis plan was also globalisation? then india started globalisation from 1960's. this is what didi is teaching to SUCI and naxalites in SKJRC, anonymous?
