Terrorism and Human Rights: Indian Experience with Repressive Laws

''The strength of the human rights depends on the depth of the law, vitality of the society, vision of the rulers, vibrancy of the institutions and use of discretionary powers. Terrorism is one part of societal experience, which calls for unusual abilities and creativity. If one presupposes that terrorism has its roots in human ‘‘unreason” or “irrationality” the solution should spring from human reason and creative political potential. The tragedy of the governance has been that instead of bringing in higher values into a terror-stricken society, the State and more particularly the law enforcing agencies are ending up imitating and imbibing terrorist methods and culture. This is the inevitable fallout of mechanistic confrontationalist approach to the national or international turmoil which in essence is political. That is the crux of the crisis of civilised governance.'' -G.Haragopal and B.Jagannatham write in EPW.

Fascism with a Red Flag

As the polling for the 15th Lok Sabha gets going, there has been an all too familiar story of attacks and disruption of the polling process by the a so-called communist party which tags the name of Mao to its posterior! Attacking the very people whom it claims to represent as they go about exercising their hard earned right to vote is a clear symptom of fascist politics. The right to vote was not a gift to the Indian masses by the ruling class politicians, but rather a democratic right wrenched through intense popular struggles against colonialism.

Relatives tell a tale of terror for Muslim inmates of Sabarmati Central Jail

"Even as the prison authorities on Monday submitted in the Gujarat High court that there was no “severe beating” of the Sabarmati jail inmates, mostly Muslims, the relatives of the inmates who met them inside the jail today said that as many as 22 inmates were severely beaten up and are in a serious condition." A report on inhuman torture inside Sabarmati jail.

The India Lobby - Drunk with the Sight of Power

"To render terrorism and terrorists as the enemy fails to distinguish between the tactics that a people use and the social and political conditions that generate their hostility. To defeat those who use terrorism, one has to understand and deal with the conditions that produce those who take to terror." Writes Vijay Prasad

"The US never considered India 'special' as we were made to believe" Writes Bhadrakumar

Through Tel Aviv, India's Reckless Road to Washington

Israel-India2.jpg

The costs of the Tel Aviv-New Delhi-Washington axis are too much to bear, at least for India. India cannot afford to mimic Israel’s failed neighborhood policy, nor can it follow the U. S. example that seeks to solve its problems by aerial bombardment. South Asia requires a regional solution to what is without doubt a regional problem, one with its roots in the Afghan jihad of the 1980s as much as the unresolved Kashmir question

Vijay Prashad writes about the deepening covert defense ties between India and Israel, under the guise of fighting terrorism and strengthening India's security system. The author points out that there is a need to seek a regional solution to the security concerns of India, instead of importing the military option projected by Israel as a counter-terrorist measure, which has failed in its own soil.

DUJ: Effective Media Council — YES, Emergency Terror Coverage Protocol — NO

"The Delhi Union of Journalists (DUJ) today, while saying 'no' to terrorism and 'yes' to caution on media reportage of terrorism has called upon the government to desist from clamping down on the media be it visual or print and instead put in order a Media Council with teeth to act without pressure from the government or other vested interests" Reports INN

Tackling terrorism - Not through war or draconian laws

"THE results of Assembly elections have proved that Indian electorate has a mature understanding of terrorism as being a world phenomenon as against anti-Pakistan sentiment projected by the BJP. The cult of war cry, in the wake of Mumbai terrorist attack had inflated the ego of the BJP to imagine itself as a colossus." Writes Rajinder Sachar

The Common Enemy - The Dawn Editorial

The Dawn Editorial.jpg

Following a special report from The Dawn, which clearly established that the apprehended terrorist Mohammad Ajmal Amir Iman "Kasab" was indeed a resident of Pakistan, from Okara to be specific, the newspaper pens an editorial asking for its fellow citizens to work toward removing the scourge of terrorism and extremism from Pakistan. Pragoti re-publishes this edit and joins The Dawn in calling Pakistanis to work toward the effort, as much as Indians would have to work toward removing fundamentalism and right wing extremism from South Asia.
