The Bengal Elections' Results and the need for a genuine Left reorientation

West Bengal Left Supporter

By whatever metric adopted - comparison with the previous election results, or with the Lok Sabha results, the verdict from the Bengal civic elections is resoundingly clear. There is a collective fatigue among the people of West Bengal with Left Front rule in the state and even if the total voting population in these set of elections were only about 17% of the overall, the message is all too quite clear.

Elections to the JNU Students Union

Dhananjay Tripathi, former president of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students Union writes about the impasse that has resulted in no elections to the JNUSU for the past two years in the university. His plea- "There is need from the part of the government to look into matter of JNUSU elections and to save it from being ruined. It is imperative that the student community of JNU should also explore all the possibilities to re-conduct their elections according to the JNUSU constitution without further delay". An article that details the controversy over the Lyngdoh Committee Recommendations and the JNUSU elections can be found here (subscription required).

El Salvador Left Poised for Election Victory: FMLN Party Promises a People-Centered Government

farabundo_marti.jpg

Ed: Marking a change from 19 years of right wing rule, the FMLN candidate Mauricio Funes has won the presidential elections in El Salvador. The right wing candidate accepted defeat. We are placing this article as the lead as it expresses the mood in El Salvador (before elections) eloquently.

“An historical event is underway in El Salvador. For the first time, a government especially dedicated to the popular sectors is possible. The current government, subjected to the interests of small groups, has shown their inability to lead the country for the common good. A new government is born precisely of the hope of citizens to break the pattern and install a government that will be at the service of the entire Salvadoran population.” - Programa de Gobierno - Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front.

Two articles on coalitions

I wrote two articles, one for the Students' Struggle and another, an editorial for my employer on the happenings vis-a-vis coalitions before the elections. The argument being made is that the Congress' very DNA precludes a cohesive UPA before the elections, while the BJP's allies' realisation of the negative returns of association with aggressive Hindutva party as also the grave economic situation that the country is faced with today, has seen them adopt new strategies - one of which is to align with the Third Front.

Fresh hope for Bangladesh

Over the past two decades, no political party and alliance in South Asia has won — in a free and fair national election — the kind of overpowering victory that the Awami League and the Grand Alliance has just scored in Bangladesh. It has been a clean sweep for the Awami-led alliance; the BNP is routed, and the Jamaat-e-Islami has been blotted out.  An editorial and a news item  from the Hindu provides a broad perspective.
