In view of the global economic crisis and economic slowdown, the UPA Government could have announced at least its intention of providing relief to the people through massive increase in public investment in agriculture, rural development, social sectors and infrastructure besides steps to protect workers and farmers from lay offs and price crashes. Finally it is official. Satyam's Rs 7000 crore corporate accounting fraud has been acknowledged to be the biggest fraud in the history of India's big bourgeoisie. While Enron, an American corporate certainly outdid the who's who in corporate crime in India in recent years, there have been many contenders for the title in the last two decades. Global Trust Bank is still fresh in our memory. In this latest instance, Price Waterhouse Coopers is implicated along with Satyam.

The Polit Bureau of the CPI(M) denounces the invasion of Gaza by the Israeli armed forces. After a week of barbaric air raids, the Israeli armed forces have now launched the ground offensive which has sharply increased civilian casualties. More than 500 people have died in this State-sponsored terrorism.
